Yes it looks very interesting but Final Fantasy lost appeal for me when so many left EQoA for it. FF left a bad taste in my mouth!

2 new FF14 videos! (showing PS3 controls live and cities/environments!)
Final Fantasy XIV is in an exception in an often brutal MMO market. It originally launched in 2010 for PC in a poorly optimized state with very little interesting content. Square Enix continued to patch the game, but it was clear major changes needed to be made. Other MMOs in situations like this would likely have dwindled and eventually been shut down forever. Square Enix decided to rewrite the graphics engine, overhaul the combat system, the interface and more, and is now in the process of bringing the revamped version, called A Realm Reborn, into closed beta testing. The PC beta test starts up on February 25 and the PS3 version will go into testing during the betaās third phase. The plan is to launch both versions simultaneously, though a final release date has yet to be determined.
Whatās also odd about this situation is that Square Enix is going to relaunch Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn as a subscription-based game. This may seem ill-advised considering the recent trend of MMOs like The Secret World, Tera and even the massively big budget Star Wars: The Old Republic giving up on the subscription model in favor of free to play options. A Realm Rebornās director and producer Naoki Yoshida explained why.
āFor a free to play model, itās very important to be able to give a lot of items to players in a very speedy manner. Unless you do that, you canāt get the money back as a business model. With [Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Rebornās] kind of quality, we wonāt be able to bring so many items. If you want to support free to play as the game business model, the game design itself should be totally different.ā
Yoshida went into even more detail about why he thinks a subscription model will work for Final Fantasy XIV even though itās failed for so many others. āThere are so many great MMOs in the Western market. Most of them, they have investors behind. So those investors want their money back as soon as the game is released. If they donāt reach a certain number of subscribers and they canāt give the money back to the investors, then they switch to a free-to-play mode to get the huge money straightaway and divide the profit among the investors. Only Blizzard and Square Enix are the companies making MMOs with their own money. We donāt have to worry about giving money back to investors. As long as we never give up we can continue supporting the game.ā
āWe think this game is going to be very, very successful, so we donāt think weāre not going to reach the target [number of subscribers]ā
Yoshida wasnāt willing to reveal the target number of subscribers.
So is A Realm Reborn actually worth looking forward to? Itās certainly a lot prettier and runs a lot better than FFXIV, and many of the environments have been adjusted so thereās more visual detail and variation in topography. I had an opportunity to play through the early starting experience, from character creation through some of the first quests. While thatās nowhere near enough time with an MMO to determine overall quality, I can definitely say many aspects feel improved. Compared to the sluggish tedium of Final Fantasy XIVās original combat system, A Realm Rebornās is noticeably faster. More importantly, the interface is hugely improved. It actually responds to inputs instead of constantly lagging a few fractions of a second behind or longer. The in-game map is also easier to use and quest goals tend to be clearly highlighted in towns. Many of the features of big budget modern MMOs are there, though how A Realm Reborn stacks up against the best in the field like World of Warcraft and Guild Wars 2 isnāt obvious.
Square Enix talks pricing models, improvements and its controller setup.

Many of the features of big budget modern MMOs are there, though how A Realm Reborn stacks up against the best in the field like World of Warcraft and Guild Wars 2 isnāt obvious.
Other features, like a search function for player sold items, an automated dungeon finder, end game raids and dungeons and even player housing are planned for A Realm Reborn. A basic public questing system was also on display. In combat zones around main towns these public quests will start up and simply by walking over to them you'll accept the quest and fight alongside any other players also in the quest area. The public quests I played involved basic kill tasks, but perhaps they'll become more sophisticated later on and include more story. These arenāt exactly novel MMO features, but seem to put Square Enixās MMO on more equal footing with the rest of the genre. For the PlayStation 3 version, Square Enix wants to make sure it plays properly on a controller. Though Yoshida mentioned chat with others is still ideal with a keyboard, it seems as though gameplay should be possible with a PS3 controller.
Unfortunately I wasnāt able to try the game out with a controller so I canāt say how it feels. With the setup, Square Enix will allow three eight-button sets to be available nearly simultaneously. By default, the D-pad handles target switching between enemies and party members and the face buttons handle functions like choosing the nearest target, opening the map and jumping. If you hold L2 or R2, you access a new set of commands tied to each face button and D-pad direction. These sets are customizable and youāre given the option to save presets, so you could have a set of abilities best for group play, one best for solo and one filled with emotes, and switch them around depending on what the situation demands and even assign macros.
PlayStation 3 and PC players will all play on the same servers and accounts will be cross-platform, so you could very well wind up in a dungeon group with both controller-using and mouse and keyboard-using players. With the PlayStation 4 out in the open now, itās natural to think Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn might also show up on Sonyās much more powerful in-development platform. According to Yoshida, a next-gen version sounds like itās a possibility. This question was asked before PlayStation 4 was officially announced.
āWe have been promising our players for over three years that weāre going to bring this game out on PlayStation 3. Weāre definitely going to keep that promise and thatās what weāre focusing on at the moment. That being said we do have a Windows version which is very high end, so as long as the console side is going to have a high spec itās not a problem for us to match those consoleās requirements.ā
So far it seems like Squareās doing the right things to fix the many mistakes made with Final Fantasy XIVās original design. Itās not clear yet whether the adjustments were enough to turn A Realm Reborn into the kind of top tier MMO experience Square Enix hopes it will be, but that should become more obvious after playing around in the upcoming beta tests.

FF14
Just wondering how many of us are planning to be on FF14 when it drops? I really enjoy being in this league and hope we can all get together as DEAD RABBITS on that game as well. We need to make sure we have each other's PSN's so we can get together when that game comes. I LUV me some DCUO but I can't wait for the next MMORPG for PS3. As it looks right now that game is defenitely gonna be FF14 and it's gonna be the CHIT!!!

i remember FF11 allowing one char to be any job or class that they unlocked..... but i think knowing ahead of time what role ppl wanna b mainly would help us get a sense of what we need, im pretty flexible, im usually a tank so id rather b a dps or DD, or for those that played EQ, a bard type class, a support roll like the trolls in dcuo

yeh thats what i did on FF11, back then u got a dragon, or wyvern as a pet nd its attack was your special 2 hour ability, nd i think depending on what type u had it did diff things with its breath, heal, damage, or a mix of both

Re: Final Fantasy 14 ARR
im really hoping they bring back to whole sub job thing, basically how it worked is u had ur main job, but u could make another ur sub nd use its abilities, only catch was ur sub lvl was half of ur main jobs level, so u only had access to subs lvl... for example a 70 paladin could have a sub job lvl of 35.... i loved that... lol

Re: Final Fantasy 14 ARR
I played Everquest for 9+ years and never crafted an item unless a quest made me. I just never got into jobs or crafting. I do it in DC because you need to mods. In EQ crafted gear was good but not the best so I only used it for a little while until I got my raid or farm drops.THRAX wrote:im really hoping they bring back to whole sub job thing, basically how it worked is u had ur main job, but u could make another ur sub nd use its abilities, only catch was ur sub lvl was half of ur main jobs level, so u only had access to subs lvl... for example a 70 paladin could have a sub job lvl of 35.... i loved that... lol

Re: Final Fantasy 14 ARR
sorry i didnt clarify when i said "job" ... its just what FF labeled their classes as, they had crafting, and it was necessary in irder to make big time in-game money.... but yeh jobs are the different roles you can play as, and one character could any job they unlocked, sub jobs gave u the ability to use the perks and abilities of another job but at half the lvl of ur main job ur currently using.... so if i was a lvl 20 paladin nd had my warrior at lvl 14, nd pld was my main, id b lvl 20pld/10 war... it was a great concept for an mmo

just a heads up the weapon determines your armoury class.... for example archers use bows..... then that leads to your party type class.... archers unlock bard.... so if u have ur eye on a certain class make sure u are using the right weapon!

FFXIV ARR
I got my fill yesterday on some more FF info and I just thought I'd share some of what I found out. Phase 3 (for Ps3) and PC has been pushed back to early June, bummer ....cries... apparently there is some kind of issue with Sony online and Square trying to figure out exactly how to implement the game for PS3. Some BS about licensing and such and how exactly to put it online for PS3. There is however a confirmed release in summer 2013. That's a little vague but defenitely is specific enough for me, maybe late August or early September.... CLAPS WITH JOY!!!!!! My plan is to be a Lancer in this game, and one day a bad ass Dragoon, or maybe archer to Bard.....or maybe ...... hell just release it already so I can play!!!!! Hope to see you all there when it comes. We need to make some kind of plan so that we can be on the same server. Oh, and BTW, Ronsin you planning to get on some FF when it hits? Everything I have read so far indicates that it is cross platform, PC and PS3/4 all in the same world.

Re: Final Fantasy 14 ARR
I want to make a Dragoon, Black Mage, Disciple of Magic & a Monk, Archer, Disciple of War.
I'm like 99.9% sure I'm going to Beta the PS3 version in June since I was selected for the PC Beta in 2010. I'm probably going to make a Guild, but not named Dead Rabbits. It will have something to do with Everquest Online Adventures Frontiers from PS2 instead. Since FF14 is a Fantasy MMO & not an action-based MMO like DCUO. Anyone who played EQOA will recognize the guild name & flock to us. You all will be welcome to join too. I will not want to be the true Master. I'll appoint a few Masters/Officers to help run raids & the guild etc. Cannot wait!

Re: Final Fantasy 14 ARR
Haven't decided yet. Tunaria was the land. I was in a great guild called Raiders of Tunaria. Although I want to take a FF name and mix it with EQ. I'll try figure it out once I play it. Wonder what this FF14 world is called? Yes Rangers were so fun on EQOA. My 2nd box's main was a 60 Forester Ranger.
